The Power of Possibility: When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn

There’s something fascinating about the way life refuses to follow the outline we had in mind. A job disappears. A relationship changes. An unexpected encounter sends us in a direction we never considered. Sometimes those moments are frightening. Sometimes they’re exhilarating. And sometimes we don’t recognize their significance until much later.

I’ve been thinking about possibility quite a bit lately, particularly as I work on my latest novel, Shadows of Blue Ridge. Most of us have a fairly clear picture of how we expect our lives to unfold. We make plans, establish routines, build careers, and become comfortable with the familiar. But what happens when circumstances interrupt those plans? We tend to think of possibility as something wonderful—a door opening, an exciting invitation, a dream suddenly within reach. Yet possibility often arrives disguised as disruption.

In Shadows of Blue Ridge, my protagonist, Laura Glover, is a successful Philadelphia attorney whose carefully structured life takes an unexpected turn. Suddenly, she finds herself in the mountains of North Georgia, far from her career and everything familiar. Laura believes her circumstances are temporary. She’s determined to return to Philadelphia and resume the life she’s worked so hard to establish. But Blue Ridge has a way of introducing possibilities she never anticipated. And here’s where writing becomes particularly interesting for me. I don’t yet know every choice Laura will make. I know the circumstances she’s facing, the people entering her life, and some of the conflicts waiting ahead. But her ultimate decisions are still taking shape. As I write, I’m discovering those possibilities right along with her.

We often imagine transformation as something dramatic. A grand decision. A sweeping change. A moment when everything suddenly becomes clear. But sometimes it begins with an ordinary conversation, a chance encounter, or the simple decision to try something unfamiliar.
Possibility doesn’t have to be spectacular to be real.

Perhaps the greatest gift of possibility is simply recognizing that the story isn’t finished. We don’t have to know exactly where a new path will lead before taking the first step. And as for Laura? Well, she’s still discovering what the next chapter might hold. Maybe we all are.
